Saturday 24th June - Day tour of St. Mels Cathedral and Tullynally Castle
St. Mel’s Cathedral in Longford Town is one of the finest Cathedral’s in Ireland.
When it was gutted by a huge fire after midnight mass on Christmas Eve 2009, some of the Country’s most priceless artefacts were destroyed.
By dawn on Christmas morning, the roof was gone, the floor had collapsed into the crypt and the people of Longford had woken to the realisation that their beloved St. Mel’s was no more.
Even the 1000 year old wooden crozier of St. Mel was in ashes, the damage was catastrophic and yet one painting which was of the Holy Family and hung just a few yards from the centre of the inferno, survived.
The former Bishop of Ardagh and Clonmacnoise, Dr Colm O’ Reilly, stated that while everything around the painting perished on Christmas morning 2009, the survival of The Holy Family painting was to him a miracle.
However with insurance money, help from local fundraising, collection etc.
Five years to the day at a cost of €30,000,000 St Mel’s opened once more on Christmas Eve for midnight mass 2014.
A lot more about the history of this beautiful Church will be revealed on the day of the tour.
