If there is anywhere in Ireland suited to contemplation and pondering the meaning of life it is surely here in Clonmacnoise, in the ancient monastic site beside the river Shannon.
Founded by St. Ciaran in 545AD it is regarded as one of the great ecclesiastical centres of Europe more about the history of this fascinating place on the day of our tour.

The shrine of St. Manchan dates back to the twelfth century
It is a magnificent example of an ancient Irish reliquary and contains bones of St. Manchan which are housed in the shrine in the church in Boher.
St. Manchans Well is some distance from Boher Church but we will visit the Well after visiting the Shrine.
When St. John Paul II came to Ireland in 1979 , the shrine of St. Manchan was brought to Clonmacnoise for the occasion of his visit and when St. John Paul returned to Rome he said “I will never forget Clonmacnoise as long as I live” Lots more about this ancient and holy place on the day.
