Blessed Edmund Rice Tour

Blessed Edmund Rice Tour

Saturday 1st September

This day tour to the birthplace and burial place of the founder of the Christian Brothers and Presentation Brothers will relive the fascinating story of Blessed Edmund Rice who was born in the Thatched House at Westcourt Callan Co Kilkenny on 1st June 1762.

Candy Tours have asked for a tour of the six-roomed house and of course particular interest in the bedroom where Edmund was born. Also on the site is the Edmund Rice Memorial Chapel and a visitor centre.

Brother Damien has agreed with John Candy to hold a short prayer meeting in the chapel after he has opened the house for viewing.

We will also travel to Mount Sion in Waterford where the Edmund Rice Chapel sits dramatically on the hill of Mount Sion, inside the Chapel is the tomb of Blessed Edmund Rice with his named etched in ogham the ancient Irish Alphabet.

Here visitors can reflect and pray for peace and comfort or you can just sit and admire the wonderful panoramic views of Waterford City below.

The Edmund Rice Heritage Centre and Museum are beside the Chapel and was officially opened in 2008 and again just as in Callan, Candy Tours have this prebooked so as much time as we need will be afforded to us. Tea and scones will be served in the ship room on our arrival.

This really is a beautiful place and it tells the full story of Edmund Rice and the Ireland in which he lived.

After we leave Waterford, we will proceed to Callan for the second part of our tour.
On our return to Carlow, we will have dinner in The Woodford Dolmen Hotel at 6.30pm and return to our original pickup points.
